If only you knew

I

If only you knew
I stare at my phone in the mornings waiting for a message.
I stay awake late into the night waiting for a response.
Day and night I waited
All hope deflated
If only you knew
Your sight makes my step falter
Your smiles makes my chest flutter
But there’s one at your side
So I took a step to the
If only you knew
Around you I’m a nervous mess
My frowns are my shield-my heart’s shield
And still your touch I crave and your presence I miss
If only you knew
I push so you could pull
I withdraw so you could draw me closer
Sad
Each time I end up further
There’s one by your side, beautiful she stands
If only you knew
I didn’t reject you, I just chose myself every single time

Pencilmarks and Scribbles Magazine was founded in 2017 by Clara Jack to be a home for African writers, asking them to come as they are and giving them room for growth. The publication aims to give back to the Nigerian Literary scene for the things it has given us.
