Dearest gentle reader,
For this message, I must assume the persona of “Lady Whistledown,” addressing the whole nation of England.
Today we shall discuss a very delicate subject: love. As it is today amongst members of the ton (the youth), it almost seems as though it doesn’t exist as it did in our parents’ time.
The notion of love now seems like a false one that was sold to us as kids, one that can only be found to exist in a fairy-tale. And for this, we have no one else to blame but ourselves.
After reading All About Love by Bella Hooks and watching Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, I’ve concluded that there is something wrong with us—a growing problem that people in this day and age have grown to accept as the norm.
Cynicism: We have lost our ability to feel love because we have grown so cynical about everything.
We have also managed to cancel out love because we are so afraid of getting hurt when we invest our emotions in a relationship. As a result, no one bothers to invest emotionally anymore.
cynicism /ˈsɪnɪsɪz(ə)m/
An inclination to believe that people are motivated purely by self-interest, scepticism.
In today’s dating scene, it is a transaction between the two parties involved to see who can obtain the most while giving the least or withholding the most.
It truly is a horrendous scene now with dating; the bar is below hell. There is no deeper bond, no comprehension of what it genuinely means to like one another in ways beyond which words can express.
What the majority of us go after are just aesthetics and pretty pictures, and of course, let’s not forget who has the best relationship goals on social media outlets. Vanity in all its forms, which I find to be most revolting.
I’ve consumed a ton of romance—some far-fetched, some down-to-earth— through reading and watching.
Even though there have been many descriptions of love, I speak of love in friendships as well as in the romantic sense.
Love isn’t just a feeling; it’s also a responsibility to choose the same person over and over again, even on the days when you feel like throwing them down a flight of stairs.
Love can be as sweet as it can be bitter. Though I haven’t had the opportunity to experience romantic love, I am grateful for loving and having been loved by my friends.
After all, Love, is one of the greatest gift God gave to mankind, and as such, it is of the utmost importance. I don’t think it’s because we are incapable of loving; I think it’s because we have simply decided not to.
Only the most courageous people actually allow themselves to love and be loved; as a result, the cowardice of the vast majority is evident.
Call me old-fashioned. Call me outdated; after all, I have been told that I have lived a life before this one. As a result, I have an old soul, one for which I am eternally grateful.
Well dearest gentle reader we’ve come to the end of this letter, till we meet again.
Yours truly,
Lady Whistledown.
